definition

An UPS is a piece of equipment developed to improve or replace the mains supply (supplied from the relevant electricity company) which feeds computer systems or industrial machinery, and more generally, any machines needing a mains supply and requiring a reliable constant supply of electricity in order to function continuously 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.

Off-line UPS

(from 250 VA to 1 400 VA)

This technology is suitable for small, non-strategic computers.

The computer is permanently in use and works on a non-regulated mains supply. During a power cut the UPS will take over the provision of power for as long as its battery lasts. The shut down signal is not sinusoidal and therefore cannot feed self-inductive loads.

Single-phase supply – Single-phase output.

Line Interactive UPS

(from 420 VA to 5 000 VA)

This technology is appropriate for small to medium sized servers or up to 10 computers.

The computer is continuously supplied through the a voltage regulated mains supply (variations in supply without the need of batteries, 176V to 264V). If the mains power supply fails the UPS takes over supply for a period of time determined by the life of its batteries. UPS are normally supplied with communication and power management software that allows the safe shut down of the system. The output signal is sinusoidal.

Single-phase supply – single-phase output.

On-line Double-conversion UPS

(from 1 000 VA to > 1 000 KVA)

Appropriate for all uses (large number of computers, server groups, automated systems and strategic or industrial applications).

The above is permanently supplied by the UPS. In this case the mains supply is continuously regulated and a near perfect sinusoid is created from an initial constant signal itself generated from the mains supply (double-conversion). Certain types of these UPS can have the potential for additional facilities. If a static switch is fitted, this emergency supply ensures continuous operation, via the mains, in the event of a output power surge, if the UPS functions are not working or if the battery has run down.

The maintenance by-pass switch (optional for 1KVA to 4KVA) allows preventative maintenance or fault diagnosis to be carried out on a machine whilst ensuring the continuation of the power supply from the mains.

Hard-wiring: Mono. / Mono. – Tri. / Mono. - Tri. / Tri.

On-line Delta-conversion UPS

(from 6 000 VA to > 1 000 KVA)

Appropriate for all applications (large number of computer, server groups, mainframes and strategic and industrial applications).

This technology, patented by APC, combines the advantages of On-line Double-conversion and Line-interactive. Its performance also allows substantial savings in overall costs.

In this scenario it is considered that only ±15% of the output of the mains is out of tolerance. The output is continuously checked and regulated to achieve a perfect sinusoid output from the UPS. During a power cut, the batteries take over and ensure the continuation of supply until they run down. They are also fitted with a static by-pass switch and a maintenance by-pass with mains continuity.

This equipment is supplied with APC's PowerChute Plus software or SILCON’s DP-SOFT CDX.

The performances achieved are outstanding – 95% efficiency, KW=KVA, a power factor very close to 1, an unlimited peak factor and can withstand a surge of 200% for up to 1 minute.

Hard-wiring: Mono. / Mono. (from 6KVA to 10 KVA) – Tri. / Tri. (from 10 KVA to 480 KVA).
