definition

Also known as "Rectifiers", chargers are used in the emergency feed of DC current and principally in Telecom, Industrial Security and Emergency Lighting systems, and specifically in automatic switches, distribution boxes and all systems relying on emergency battery back-up.

Two types of technology are most commonly used.

Specialised technology

- Thyristor technology chargers
- Switch mode technology chargers

Thyristor technology chargers

This technology is mostly relevant to industrial specifications.

This is the most tried and tested technology still in use today. Its reputation is based on its good performance in extreme conditions and its excellent track record over 20 years.

The most requested voltages are currently 24 DC, 48 VDC, 110DC, 127VDC and 220VDC. Capacity is almost unlimited.

Chargers of this type are often associated with industrial inverters or NiCd batteries.

Their main advantage is that they are easily adapted to meet specific needs. Their principal limitations are their size that requires specific installation rooms, and, an only average electrical output.

Switch mode technology chargers

This technology is mostly used in the telecom field but can now be adapted to the industrial sector by the integration of modules in the industrial distribution boxes.

Modular format in 19" racks. Supply specification of 48V 15A to 60V 200A. Environmental protection from Hertzian pollution (EN 55022 class B standard). CEM conform (Standard NE 50082). Incoming sine wave, power factor > 0.95. Parallel operation: unlimited number of chargers. Reduced size & maintenance. Prices are higher than those for Thyristor technology.
